The Covariance Structure of Earnings in Great Britain: 1991-1999
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper I analyse the dynamic structure of earnings in Great Britain for the period 1991-1999 by decomposing the earnings covariance structure into its permanent and transitory components. Using information on monthly earnings of male full-time employees from the first nine waves of the British Household Panel Study I find that earnings inequality increases over the Nineties. However, earnings mobility may have also increased. That is, for this period earnings persistence falls. Surprisingly, I also find that relative earnings persistence declines over the life cycle, which implies lower mobility for younger cohorts. This evidence is at odds with previous literature on earnings dynamics both for Britain and other OECD countries. Unlike recent studies, I also consider the effects of observed characteristics on the covariance structure of log earnings and find that human capital and job related characteristics account for nearly all persistent earnings differences and that the transitory component is highly persistent. * This paper is a revised version of a chapter from my PhD thesis at the Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Essex. The Dynamics of Individual Male Earnings in Great Britain: 1991-1999

متن کاملThe Covariance Structure of Earnings in Great Britain : 1991 - 1995 Part 1 Xavier
In this paper I decompose the monthly earnings of male full-time employees into their permanent and transitory components, using the British Household Panel Study for the period 1991-95. Cross-section evidence points at a positive message: the increasing earnings inequality trend of the 1980s is interrupted. Notwithstanding this, I find that a substantial proportion of individual earnings diffe...
متن کاملHourly Earnings Differentials for Unionised Labour: A Decile-Based Examination in Great Britain
This paper assesses the impact that trade unions have on the wage rates paid to full-time employees in Great Britain using data from the Quarterly Labour Force Survey. Unlike previous research, this analysis is conducted over the entire range of the earnings distribution, where it is found that unions have more scope for increasing the earnings of workers on the very lowest of wage rates. Asymm...
متن کاملEarnings Inequality and Earnings Mobility in Great Britain: Evidence from the BHPS, 1991-94
This paper draws on the first four waves of data of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) to analyse the statics and dynamics of the earnings distribution in the early nineties. Motivated by the wide range of concerns which mobility is viewed to serve, I analyse mobility under three complementary headings: (i) predictability or state dependence; (ii) movement; and (iii) welfare implications...
متن کاملAnatomy of Earnings Mobility in Britain: Evidence from the BHPS, 1991-1995
Using the first five waves of the British Household Panel Survey (1991-5) I analyse male earnings mobility within and between population subgroups defined by age, education and employment status. I find that mobility occurs mainly within those groups. There is evidence of greater mobility amongst the young, part-time workers and the self-employed. However, mobility is lower for more highly educ...
